Steve Martin started his business in 1985 with one small Ditch Witch® trencher, hence the original name Steve Martin’s Trenching (SMT and began connecting residents to the Henry County Public Service Authority (PSA). During this time, he began contracting work for the Henry County PSA along with several commercial building contractors.  Throughout the years, he has continuously expanded his field of expertise, and now also specializes in grading, excavation, jack & boring, and making wet taps. What started with one piece of equipment and a work truck has grown into a fleet of excavators, backhoes, loaders, dozers, dump trucks, trailers, tractor trailers and several work trucks.

Steve’s wife, Diana, came to work full-time for the business as the Office Manager in 1995. The company was also incorporated that year and began serving municipalities (counties, cities, towns) with their underground water, sewer and storm drain needs.  Steve Martin’s Trenching, Inc. prides itself on quality work and completing projects ahead of schedule. While still working on smaller municipal and commercial projects, SMT, Inc also has the capabilities of handling and bonding larger projects as well. The combination of both scopes of work is what sets us apart from the competition.

The success and reputation of a company not only reflects the dedication of the owner, but also the hard work and loyalty of the employees. We take great pride in retaining quality, full-time employees with competitive pay and benefits.  Steve and Diana’s son, Patrick, recently joined the family business after graduating from Radford University with a BS in Geology.  He plans to pursue his MBA in the near future.
